Tired Diver Tows

Objective:

To safely perform the correct tow for the situation and assist your buddy in need.

Value:

This skill can become very important in the event your buddy needs your assistance; it will help you decide the correct tow to give you the most benefit and provide the greatest safety.

Steps to Perform:

There are 3 Primary Tows
In ANY Assistance Scenario [tired or rescue]; approach with extreme caution! A drowning person wants nothing more than to float... your head makes an excellent place to stand.

  1. Tank Tow
  2. Fin Push
  3. Doe-See-Doe

Tank Tow:

  1. Used primary to tow a buddy in using your powerful leg muscles in salm seas
  2. Have the buddy requiring assistance inflate their BCD fully and lay on their back [face up to the sky]
  3. Move around behind them
  4. As much as the title suggest, actually grab their longest hose to give you the most room to kick [usually the guage cluster]
  5. Inflate your BCD
  6. Lay on your back and look over your shoulder to see where you are going, take a bearing
  7. Start kicking away from your buddy [holding the guage cluster] toward your destination

Fin Push:

  1. Used primary to overcome surge or waves. [You are basically uising the tired buddy as a battering ram through the waves]
  2. Have the buddy requiring assistance inflate their BCD fully and lay on their back [face up to the sky]
  3. Move around to their feet
  4. Ask your buddy to put their regulator in her/his mouth [to protect from surge]
  5. Place your regulator in your mouth
  6. Place your buddy's fins one on each shoulder
  7. Take a bearing on where you're headed and start kicking [your face should be in the water to reduce strain and maximize power]
  8. Confirm you are still ehaded in the right direction every few kicks
